ACCOMODATION OPTIONS FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN AOTEAROA/NEW ZEALAND

24.08.04 :: Terrence Aschoff, Manager CHRANZ

The Centre for Housing Research, Aotearoa New Zealand (CHRANZ) has released an independent research report, jointly funded with the Cross Departmental Research Pool, on Accommodation Options for Older People in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

The research by the New Zealand Institute For Research on Ageing (NZiRA) and Business and Economic Research Limited (BERL) analyses the housing situation of older people (aged 65 and over) in New Zealand and the housing options which are open to them, both at the present time and in the future. It explores what types of accommodation will best meet the needs of a ageing population and improve the quality of life for older people, especially those with low incomes, renters, Maori, Pacific people and women.

The key challenges identified in the report are:

  • The need to maintain and upgrade mainstream housing (owner-occupied and rented) so that ‘ageing in place’ remains viable.
  • The need to develop a range of alternative housing options to meet special needs, whether these be care needs, social or cultural preferences

“CHRANZ expects that this research will inform policy advisors and decision-makers on broad strategic issues affecting older persons’ housing”, said Terrence Aschoff, Manager, CHRANZ.

A full copy of the report is available.
