08.07.05 :: Terrence Aschoff, Manager CHRANZ

The Centre for Housing Research, Aotearoa New Zealand (CHRANZ) has contracted a research consortium led by MOTU Economic and Public Policy Research to undertake a study into Affordable Housing in the Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman Regions: A Solutions Study at a cost of $210,000 (GST Inclusive).

The study is being carried out to address the causes of, and solutions to, housing affordability problems in the Nelson, Marlborough & Tasman (NMT) regions, in the context of labour market, economic and demographic developments.

The study will uncover the causes of housing stress in the regions with a particular focus on connections between the housing market and the changing labour markets. The nature of stresses borne by workers, families and employers involved in emerging export industries will also be highlighted. Finally, the researchers will work with local reference groups to use the research findings to develop relevant solutions for each of the NTM regions.

The study is jointly funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, with $90,000 from the Regional Initiatives Fund, the Ministry of Social Development, with $30,000 through the Work and Income regional office for Nelson, Marlborough, and the West Coast and CHRANZ with $90,000, who will manage the project.
